Online dating strikes again!
Britt was living in a cute apartment tucked into the trees. She was feeling financially independent for the first time in her adulthood at the age of 21.
There is excitement about moving out on your own.
There is bliss in moving out on your own.
There is a fear of failure moving out on your own.
There is peace coming home to a place you've earned on your own.
There is something warming about creating a space of your own to share with others.
Desiring to share meant companionship seeking began. Online.
Online dating was all the rage, and Britt thought, why not? Let's give this a go.
Now the planning -
What pictures do you use?
What don't you share for safety purposes?
How fast do you move to a first date from speaking?
What are all the etiquette details for doing this?
Am I doing this right?
What is my competition?
What do my "customers" look like shopping for someone like me?
Wait, was this marketing Britt to the masses? Yes. Yes, it was.
Upon setting up the dating profile, she began speaking to a nice guy. The Engineer was handsome, polite, funny, intriguing, and thoughtful. He actually could keep a conversation going, and it was enjoyable.
The relationship developed and was a very "mature" feeling. They joined softball leagues, double-dated, and introduced family and friends to each other for a year and a half.
Getting to know someone is a lot of work. What they like, beliefs, desires, illnesses, history, and experiences make up who a person is and becomes. It's a wild ride and honestly can be fun or an uphill battle. Note to readers; It should be fun. Work comes later. So if it begins as an uphill battle, it may not be a good fit.
With each relationship, Britt learned more about herself, her beliefs, and what truly she was looking for out of life.
The Engineer ticked a lot of boxes for her. There was one box she couldn't seem to get past. The Engineer desired to make loads of money. She never looked for money as a way of success. It was a way to make ends meet.
Success to Britt was and will be to be happy upon laying her head on her pillow at night. She knew happiness came from within and not from others or things.
When you realize something like a life goal is so important to someone and consuming it can distract from one another and create tension. Money can buy happiness for a moment, but it will leave you feeling empty in the end. So if given the choice of happiness, or money, Britt would choose happiness every time.
The Engineer was a nice guy. He did leave her thoughtful gifts and tried to win her back. She knew he'd be happier with someone who shared that life desire and goal. The fates smiled upon him, and he did find that someone and they had two beautiful kids. Britt glances back on their fond memories and will always be grateful for what they learned during that year and a half together.
It would be months before finding love again. She took time to grow and learn more about herself as this lesson was a good one, and she had to camp on it for a bit.
It's okay not to know what you want 100%. Just don't compromise on happiness. Ever.
