Some say...if you love someone, you'll let them go.
It is what Britt had to do decades ago. Yet, those feelings and comforts never leave you. They are what you base the next relationship against, adding to the list of goodness created as you morph into an adult of kindness, love, and compassion.
It's fascinating how you can attend the same school/program/sport/etc. With someone for years, not knowing the love they could offer you. What adventures await you with this person? Timing is tricky like that.
It was then Britt learned love is supposed to be easy, natural, and flow. Your gratitude for someone is what gets you through difficult situations and sees you into clarity when it's time for you set them free.
After high school, there always seems to be a group of friends you hang with while your career is getting carved out. Those friends are eclectic and vary in age, gender, interests, and all the things you find groovy at that moment. Those friends come and go as careers take off and folks move further away.
For Britt, this group consisted of a splendid fella we'll call"The Sailor". This fella was tall, dark, handsome, funny, and the most compassionate person known to that date. There was one campfire where things just sparked, and they didn't want to stop talking and realize how much they cared for one another. The ease and feel of it all being natural came into play at this time. It just was meant to be.
The Sailor was, driven, goal-oriented, family-embracing, thoughtful, adventurous, and gracious. These qualities encouraged Britt to grow and become a better human being. It was a glorious 1.5 years of her life.
Driven - He didn't compromise his desires and life ambitions for their relationship.
Goal-oriented - He didn't slow down to her pace. Britt didn't want him to compromise his dreams.
Family embracing - He fit like a glove into her family and accepted each of them as they were, and Britt with his family (so she recalls/hopes).
Thoughtful - He'd leave the sweetest notes and remember Britt on his travels with small gifts of affection upon returning.
Adventurous - His heart encouraged him back then to sail the seas for long periods.
Gracious - Upon returning from sea, he'd visit and check in. His heart could never settle where Britt's roots desired to be.
Along came a day when they knew there was a flame to travel and explore that Britt didn't share. As a tree has roots, she adored where hers were planted. It was okay. They were going to be okay. The thought was, if he returned and it's meant to be, it'll be.
In those moments when you love someone enough, you don't hold them back. You ask them, how can I help you get there?
That is what her heart did. She supported The Sailor through it all and encouraged him to explore. To be free.
He sailed away and lived happily ever after.
It was a difficult lesson to learn but glad for it over time.
Today, Britt's heart couldn't be happier for him.
When you love someone, you'll let them go.
